The name of Phong Nha
In Vietnamese, “Phong” means “Wind” and “Nha” means “Tooth”. Thus, the name Phong Nha can be interpreted as “Winds blow through interdental spaces.” This metaphor refers to the fresh cool air blowing through gracious stalactites and stalagmites in the cave. Indeed, this name depicts exactly the main features of Phong Nha Cave.
With the same name as the national park, Phong Nha Cave is usually misunderstood as the only cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. However, the park accommodates a large system of caves, not just Phong Nha Cave. As it brings the whole system’s name, we can see the significance of Phong Nha Cave to the national park.
As you might know, Phong Nha Cave is a pioneer of Quang Binh cave tourism, opening a series of cave tours to this land. It has contributed dramatically to the tourism development of Quang Binh Province.
Structure of Phong Nha Cave
Phong Nha Cave is 7729 meters long. Its entrance is 20-25 meters wide, 10 meters high, and 83 meters deep. Besides, it contains 14 grottos, with various branches and a 13,969-meter underground river. Scientists have surveyed 44.5 kilometers of grottos in this cave so far. However, tourists can only penetrate to a distance of 1500 meters.
14 grottos, or 14 chambers, in the main Phong Nha Cave are connected by an underwater river that runs for 1.5 kilometers. Its secondary corridors branch off in all directions. The outer cave and some of the inner caves have roofs that tower between 25 and 40 meters above the water level.
From the 14th chamber, there may be other corridors leading to similarly large chambers. Yet, this area proves more dangerous for explorers because of the ongoing erosion of the limestone in the cavern. Plus, its Shallow Cave is located 800 meters from the cave mouth, where there is a spectacular landscape of sand and rock.
Phong Nha Cave, like most of the caves in this area, has been continuously shaped by the Chay River. Further, the Son River flows into the mouth of the cave and keeps flowing underground. When it becomes an underground river, it is referred to as the Nam Aki River. This river emerges at a site 20 kilometers to the south, near Pu Pha Dam Mountain.
Seven Best Features Of Phong Nha Cave
The Longest Water Tunnel
The first best feature of Phong Nha Cave is its longest water tunnel of 28 kilometers. This water tunnel belongs to a grotto inside Phong Nha Cave, called Hang Vom Cave. It has one of the most considerable scales in the Phong Nha limestone block.
Its length lasts from Ruc Ca Roong Cave at an altitude of about 360 meters above sea level, stretching from South to North.

The Highest And Widest Cave Entrance
The next best highlight of Phong Nha Cave is the highest and widest cave entrance, which is up to 20-25 meters, with a height of 10 meters. Looking from afar, it looks like a big bowl put upside down on the water, making an easy way for boats to pass through.
As you might know, you need to travel by boat on the Son River for a while before reaching Phong Nha Cave. Thus, this large entrance is the first place to welcome you to the magnificent cave. Interestingly, it’s like an intersection of light and dark.
The boat gradually floats on the crystal clear river, reflecting your image like a mirror, through the entrance into the dark. You will feel as if you are entering a mysterious and exotic world.
The Widest And Most Beautiful Sandy Beach And Reef
Another feature is that there is the widest and most beautiful sandy beach and reef located inside Phong Nha Cave. It has various unique reefs naturally shaped like lions, unicorns, Buddha statues, palaces, and more. They are totally natural creations, without any human influence.
After millions of years of formation, Phong Nha Cave has created such special reefs fascinating tourists for a long time. Visitors to Phong Nha Cave always enjoy playing with their imagination to predict what those shapes are.

Furthermore, we have to mention the sparkling golden sand beach inside the cave. You are not visiting any beach, but you still see a stunning sandy beach here! Together with light, it shimmers gorgeously, showing how miraculous nature is.
The Most Beautiful Underground Lake
Also, Phong Nha Cave accommodates the most beautiful underground lake with a length of up to 13,969 meters. It offers tourists spectacular views thanks to the deep, blue, and pure water. Visitors can experience sailing here while leisurely admiring the fantasy world of Phong Nha Cave.
One of the best ways to enjoy this stunning underground river is to go kayaking around it. You can refer to the Phong Nha Cave kayak tour as we mentioned at the top of this article.

The Most Beautiful System Of Stalactites
Another feature of Phong Nha Cave that you can’t ignore is its most beautiful system of stalactites. Majestic reefs and underground lakes are unimaginable, but the true highlight of this cave is its heavenly stalactite system.
They make many visitors overwhelmed by the magnificent and fanciful scene of the massive formations. As one gets farther into the cave, the more illusory the stalactites and stalagmites look. When bright light shines on them, they glitter like precious gems. You can only feel everything once you experience it in person.
The Longest Underground River
The proudest feature of Phong Nha Cave might be one of the longest underground rivers in the world. With a length of up to 1,500 meters, it offers tourists an epic, picturesque, and unspoiled beauty. You will be immersed in its magical appearance, in a mysterious atmosphere of the dark and the light interlining.
The Largest And Most Beautiful Dry Cave
The final highlight of Phong Nha Cave is its largest and most beautiful dry cave. Apart from splendid water caves, rivers, and lakes, Phong Nha owns a sizeable dry cave full of glamour. You can discover this beauty in a system of wooden corridors arranged throughout the dry cave.
Step by step on the corridors, you can admire its formations while enjoying the fresh atmosphere flowing around the cave.
